Travel Tip: Catch a Hurling or Gaelic Football Game

by Anglo Brampton Travel - Dublin South, L, Ireland -

One of the most exciting things to do while in Dublin is to catch one of the traditional local sporting events. At the Croke Park Stadium you can watch some uniquely Irish events.

Hurling is listed in the Gusiness Book of World Records as the fastest field sport, with the ball (the "sliotar") reaching speeds above 130 kph. This rough and tumble contact sport has prehistoric origins; it's been played for at least 3,000 years.

Gaelic football, commonly known as "Gah," is believed to have descended from ancient Irish football known as "caid" which dates back to medieval times. It can best be described as a combination of soccer and rugby.

To keep the sports "pure" it maintains an amateur status, with each parish in Ireland having a team.

Both are fixtures in Irish life and aren't to be missed. Catch a game or take a tour of the GAA museum and the stadium.
