Top Ski Resorts in Austria

Austria has superb ski resorts that can rival the famous slopes of France, while giving you a lot more value for your money in many respects.

Back in the Seventies, most British skiers went to Austria, then as the French began creating giant linked resort areas, British skiers migrated en masse to the likes of La Plagne, Les Arcs and Tignes. However, Austria nowadays represents better value for money than the French resorts in most aspects, from general costs to eating and partying costs, ski school and lift pass costs, with no less sophisticated lift systems and facilities than the French. So without further suspense, here are the best Austrian resorts for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiing:

Best for beginners: Alpbach
Alpbach has two schools that can teach you the basics, and their single nursery slope in the village centre is ideal for practicing snowploughs after lessons. When you’re ready to head out on the real slopes, the main ski area is a five minute ride. Complete beginners do not need the complexity of a large resort with a linked ski area, so the Alpbach, with it amazing atmosphere fits the bill well.

Best for intermediates: Saalbach
Saalbach and its neighbouring resort Hinterglemm share the most sophisticated lift system in Austria, and the slopes here are ideal for adventurous intermediates. The two villages are at the centre of a ring of 2,000m peaks which form a natural ski circuit skiable in either direction. Be sure to check out the après ski at either of these resorts.

Best for advanced: St. Anton
St. Anton can be regarded as one of the top three resorts in Europe for serious skiers. If you’re looking to take on a red run, head to the slopes on St. Anton’s main mountain, while the Rendl ski area on the other side offers a less challenging run, and is sunnier.
